Pipework, water and drainage

Plumbing: pipework replacement, taps and domestic hot water

Our plumbing service covers cold and hot water pipework, drainage, taps, water heaters and boilers, and urgent repairs. Climate control (air conditioning, aerothermal) is handled as a separate service, coordinated when the works require it.

What it involves

In homes older than 30 years, old galvanised iron or corroded copper pipework is common, with flow problems, noise and leaks at old joints. A full renewal replaces that material with modern multilayer pipework, with lower noise and better corrosion resistance.

Plumbing also includes domestic hot water production (electric heaters, gas boilers) and drainage within the property. Air conditioning and aerothermal heat-pump systems for climate control, by their own nature (refrigerant circuit, fluorinated gases), are treated as a separate service — see Climate control.

01 Concept
From the meter to the last tap

A complete plumbing intervention includes pipework replacement from the meter to every tap, drainage (drains and internal wastewater pipes in the home) and domestic hot water production. Air-based climate control has its own page.

The water pathway

Hydraulic routing, from entry to use points

Plumbing is designed following the water pathway: from the main connection to the last tap, passing through DHW production and drainage. Each stretch answers to a different logic.

01

Water entry

Main meter, main shut-off valve and inlet filter: the first reading of the system. Good routing starts here.

linear_scale
02

Risers and branches

Vertical cold- and hot-water columns, with shut-off valves per room so works can be done without cutting off the whole home.

03

Consumption points

Taps and fittings connected to branches of the correct section, with flow limiters and aerators.

04

Drainage

Drains with minimum slope to the siphon trap, sound-insulated wastewater pipes and inspection chamber before the shared stack.

water_heater
05

DHW and recirculation

Boiler or heater connected to the hot-water circuit and, in larger homes, a return loop for immediate availability at distant taps.

Supply vs. drainage

Two parallel networks, two distinct logics

The supply network works under pressure; the drainage network works by gravity. Understanding the difference is key to designing bathroom or kitchen plumbing without surprises.

water_drop

Supply network

Operates under pressure from the meter. Carries cold and hot water to every consumption point with sections sized by simultaneous flow. Allows horizontal and vertical routing with few restrictions.

waves

Drainage network

Works by gravity towards the shared stack. Requires a continuous minimum slope, siphon traps to prevent odours, and is very hard to change once closed. Dictates where sink, basin, shower and WC can go.

Points per room

Where plumbing works in a home

Domestic plumbing concentrates in three rooms with distinct technical demands. Renovating any of them means revisiting the involved supplies and drains.

kitchen Kitchen

Sink, dishwasher and, in some cases, washing machine. Single-lever or pull-out tap, under-counter or over-island.

bathtub Main bathroom

Shower or bath, basin, WC and bidet where present. Thermostatic shower taps and accessible shut-off valves.

soap Secondary washroom

Basin, WC and, where space allows, a compact shower tray. Fewer supplies but the same technical demands.

local_laundry_service Laundry

Taps for washing machine/dryer, specific siphon trap and, in villas, auxiliary sink with drain.

water_heater Plant room

Boiler, water heater or heat pump on a dedicated circuit, with safety valves and expansion vessel as required.

Supply and drainage

Two networks that never share a mistake

Pressurised supply and gravity drainage run on separate paths with their own materials, slopes and tests. Pressure testing seals the trace before any wall is closed.

Control points

What we always check before closing walls

Before tiling or closing a false ceiling with plumbing inside, we check four essential technical points to prevent future leaks.

check_circle

Pressure test

Hydraulic test for at least two hours above service pressure before closing chases.

straighten

Drain slope

Verification of minimum slope in every drain from the siphon trap to the stack.

build

Accessible valves

Shut-off valves per room installed in accessible access panels, not under continuous tiling.

volume_off

Sound insulation

Elastic fixings on stacks and sound-insulated pipework in embedded sections crossing bedroom areas.

The visible side

When the pipework ends the taps begin

The pressure test closes the hidden phase. From that point on the taps, shower columns and radiators decide the daily experience of the installation.

Worth knowing

Before deciding the scope

Plumbing has some important technical and legal conditions.

home_repair_service
Vertical riser vs interior pipework

The vertical riser is usually shared with the building; replacing it affects the neighbours. Interior pipework of the home is changed without community agreements.

water_drop
Costa del Sol water hardness

Costa del Sol water has medium-to-high hardness that accelerates wear on heating elements, taps and heaters. Fitting water softeners extends equipment life.

policy
Gas legalisation

Gas installations require project and licensed-installer certificate, with mandatory periodic review. It is not equivalent to general plumbing.

schedule
Supply interruption

Replacing the main pipework requires cutting off water for hours. It is coordinated in advance to minimise disruption at home.

In depth

Plumbing in Málaga: pipework replacement and DHW production

Residential plumbing in Málaga combines cold and hot water pipework, drainage and domestic hot water production. Homes older than 30 years often still carry galvanised iron or aged copper pipework with flow, noise and leak issues at the joints: complete replacement with modern PEX-AL-PEX multilayer is the most frequent intervention in our complete renovations and in full bathroom reworks.

Air-based climate control (air conditioning, aerothermal) has its own service because it requires fluorinated-gas handling and specific professional authorisation. At reformasmalaga.net we keep plumbing (water, drainage and DHW) separate from climate control so the client can contract exactly what they need. DHW production is resolved with an electric heater, a condensing gas boiler or a heat pump depending on the consumption profile and the available installations.

Frequently asked

Common questions about plumbing

01

When is it worth replacing all the pipework in the home?

expand_more

When there is visible corrosion at joints, reduced flow, frequent noise or repeated leaks. If the installation is also pre-1990s, complete replacement usually works out better than successive spot repairs.

02

Are plumbing and climate control the same service?

expand_more

They share some installations (water network, condensate drains) but are different services: air-based climate control requires handling fluorinated gases and specific professional authorisation. We provide both, but as separate services with their own pages and independent quotes.
